Actor Tony Burton, best known for his role as Apollo Creed’s trainer Tony “Duke” Evers in the first six Rocky films, died late yesterday in California.

Burton, who was also a professional boxer in the 1950’s, had reportedly faced health troubles for much of the past year, spending several months in the hospital. Rocky costar Carl Weathers took to Twitter to honor the late actor, saying, “His intensity and talent helped make the Rocky movies successful.”

Burton also appeared in The Shining, and his last acting credit was in 2007’s Hack!
