Actress Shailene Woodley recently spoke with digital magazine The Edit about her unusual childhood, calling her parents’ childrearing strategies “f—ked up.”

Woodley’s father is a psychologist and her mother is a counselor. Woodley said they often used “manipulative, reverse psychology” to teach her lessons as a child. When she and her brother argued, they would be forced to hug each other in the front yard, sometimes for hours.

“The whole time you’re just seething, you’re disliking this person with so much energy, but if you let go you have to stay there for an extra hour,” Woodley explained of the practice.

Still, the Snowden star says her family is her “everything.”
