In 2014, Lady Gaga revealed to the public that she had been sexually assaulted at age 19. However, several of her family members – including her grandmother and a beloved aunt – did not know she was a rape survivor until her moving Oscar performance of “Til It Happens to You.”

The song, co-written with Diane Warren, was nominated for an Oscar for the documentary The Hunting Ground. Gaga was joined on stage by fifty sexual assault survivors in an emotional moment that brought tears to the eyes of many.

The singer also shared a message of hope on social media, reminding fellow survivors that it’s not their fault, and encouraging them to speak up.
