Gabby Douglas Hospitalized: Why One Member of the Final Five Missed the VMAs

It’s been a tough August for Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas.

After facing media scrutiny and online bullying for standing at attention during the National Anthem, rather than holding her hand over her heart, the 20-year-old gymnast has been hospitalized with a “seriously infected” mouth injury.

Douglas was scheduled to join the four other members of the USA Gymnastics team who took home gold in Rio as they presented at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. However, Douglas was forced to cancel her appearance after being admitted to the hospital.

Few details are known, but Douglas’ publicist says, “She continues to have deep swelling and adverse reactions to medications.”
