Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández was killed in a boating accident in the early morning hours of September 25, along with two other passengers. He was just 24 years old.

The U.S. Coast Guard discovered the overturned boat around 3am near Government Cut, Florida. The boat appeared to have sustained a “severe impact” with a jetty.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life,” said Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.

It is believed the young pitcher was expecting a child with his girlfriend.
