Though she has been reticent to publicly discuss her 2015 break-up with Sean Penn, Charlize Theron opened up to WSJ Magazine for their April issue, crying as she discussed the painful split.

“We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore,” Theron said through tears. “In my honesty about wanting to have more kids, there was an understanding that a relationship had to go somewhere before it was going to be — what you hope for, which ultimately did not happen.”

Theron and Penn were long-time friends before becoming romantic in 2014. They appeared inseparable for 18 months before parting ways.
