In a new interview with Good Housekeeping, Kelly Clarkson says she’s the happiest she’s ever been. However, that wasn’t always the case. The first-ever American Idol winner admits she struggled deeply with fame.

“I was in a very dark place for a long time,” Clarkson said of her early years in the music business. “It’s just so hard to have normalcy. I love to sing, and I love to talk to people at meet-and-greets. It’s just all the crap that comes along with this job.”

Clarkson credits her family with helping her overcome her struggles. She shares two children and two step-children with husband Brandon Blackstock.

“Becoming a mother has made me next-level confident,” Clarkson says.
