Carrie Underwood took home two CMT awards on June 8 for Performance of the Year and Female Video of the Year for “Smoke Break”, but it was her show-stopping performance of hit single “Church Bells” that is making headlines.

Backed by a gospel choir, Underwood, 33, sang the powerful tale of a housewife who kills her husband after enduring years of physical abuse. “Church Bells” is the third single from the country star’s new album Storyteller.

Underwood finished the performance to a raucous standing ovation from fans and fellow country artists.
