In a surprising decision by the Swedish Academy, Bob Dylan has won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The honor, which is typically awarded to novelists, has not been given to an American since Toni Morrison in 1993. Dylan’s name has been floated as a contender in the past, as his songwriting is legendary, but many are still shocked that the 12-time Grammy winner was chosen.

Swedish Academy member Per Wastberg gave some insight on the selection committee’s decision, saying, “He is probably the greatest living poet.”

Dylan has not yet issues a public statement on the honor.
